As a risk manager, you will be responsible for the leadership, innovation, governance and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor the department’s operational and strategic risk. You are expected to work with internal and external stakeholders to assess and identify the potential risks that may hinder the reputation, safety, security and financial prosperity of the department. Once these risks have been identified, assessed and evaluated, you will be tasked with implementing processes and procedures to reduce those risks through planning and problem-solving, and to ensure that the department fully prepared to deal with potential threats.

The responsibilities of this role are:
  • Design and implement an overall risk management process, structure and controls for the department, which includes analysis of financial and reputational impact on the department or University when risks occur
  • Develop Enterprise Risk Management tools, practices, and policies to analyze and report enterprise risks
  • Ensure the department’s risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations, statutes, policies and strategic imperatives of the department and the University
  • Perform risk assessments: Analyse current risks and identifying potential risks that are affecting the department
  • Perform risk evaluations: Evaluate the department’s previous handling of risks, and comparing potential risks with criteria set out by the department such as costs and legal requirements
  • Exhibit business process knowledge, possesses a broad based operational perspective and provides solutions for non-insurance related business risk issues
  • Establish the level of risk the department is willing to take
  • Educate management, peers and colleagues about the most significant risks to the business
  • Ensure staff understand the risks that might affect their section and ensure they understand their own accountability for individual risks
  • Build risk awareness amongst staff by providing support and training within the company
  • Produce risk reporting tailored to the relevant audience
  • Create business continuity plans to limit risks
  • Conduct policy and compliance audits where necessary, which will include liaising with internal and external auditors
  • Review any new major contracts or internal business proposals, including letters of agreement, contracts, leases and other legal documents

The ideal candidate will need to have the following qualities and experience:
  • Degree in Law, Business, Finance or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ proven experience in broad-based operational risk management with experience in developing and implementing risk management policies and processes
  • Possess commercial perspective with ability to understand broader business issues
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and control
  • Experience with auditing and reporting procedures
  • Familiarity with industry compliance standards and regulations
  • Strong computer, numerical and research skills
  • Knowledge of analysis software is an advantage, e.g. SAS
  • Highly developed analytical mind with problem-solving aptitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong project management ability
  • Professional Risk Manager certification is a plus
