Our client is seeking a Laboratory Manager who will provide scientific-technical support for field-based teaching and research at the College. The Laboratory Manager will work with head of laboratories, faculty and students to successfully perform field studies and related technical, logistic, laboratory and administrative tasks.

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for coordinating and leading ongoing field-based research at our ecological long-term research and teaching sites in mangroves and other locations. The position will require substantial time to be spent at field sites conducting fieldwork.

The responsibilities of this role are:
  • Planning and supporting field-based teaching and research in Environmental Sciences, Ecology and related fields
  • Supporting students in a variety of field-based projects in Environmental Sciences
  • Being responsible for coordinating and leading long-term field studies
  • Leading and engaging in flora and fauna surveys
  • Maintaining the monitoring studies in our long-term research and teaching sites
  • Liaising with relevant government and non-government entities
  • Being the primary contact and coordinator with the National Parks Board, Singapore (NParks), our primary collaborator for field studies
  • Ensuring and supporting the smooth flow of basic scientific, logistic, technical and administrative operations. This includes assisting with administrative processes such as the procurement of supplies and equipment for teaching and research within the Environmental Sciences, as well as working with appropriate equipment vendors and representatives to procure, install and maintain equipment
  • Any other duties assigned by the Head of Laboratories and faculty

The ideal candidate will need to have the following qualities and experience:
  • Degree in the Sciences, with a specialisation in Ecology or a related discipline
  • Candidates with a PhD or equivalent research experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant research experience. Extensive experience with field-based research and experimental design is essential
  • Familiarity with taxonomy of Singaporean flora and fauna, or the desire and ability to be proficient in taxonomic identification
  • Ability to perform weekly fieldwork with regular overnight stays at field sites
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic field equipment needs; the ability to build/design some basic scientific field apparatuses is a plus
  • Ability to work effectively with groups of students, faculty members, and other staff, and liaise effectively with government and non-government entities
  • Demonstrate competency in database management and basic data processing
  • Ability to work independently, motivated, and resourceful; should have strong analytical skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Budget management experience
