The Digital Historical Maps of Southeast Asia project is seeking a skilled full-stack software developer to design and create a platform to host digitised pre-1900 maps of Southeast Asia.

This position is an 18-month contract position, ending no later than 30 Sept 2021.

The project is in collaboration with the National Library Singapore, Bodleian Library University of Oxford, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library Yale University, and Leiden University Libraries. The successful candidate will work as a part of a team consisting of a User experience (UX) designer and a senior curator in creating an online platform based on the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). The team will also work with the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators and historical subject matter experts in designing and developing this platform. The Software Developer will also be responsible for coordinating all technical activities, documentation, and designing the architecture of the platform.

The ideal candidate will need to have the following qualities and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an IT, digital humanities or a related field with 3 year of relevant software development experience
  • Recent graduates with programming skills are welcomed to apply
  • Well versed in both front-end and back-end technologies and programming languages
  • Demonstrated programming skills in modern programming languages and platforms. (such as Python and Javascript)
  • Fluent with HTML5, common JavaScript frameworks (such as JQuery, and AngularJS) and CSS frameworks (such as Bootstrap)
  • Experienced with Git version control
  • Experienced with test-driven development and agile software development practices
  • Familiarity with applying WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards
  • Working knowledge of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and Solr will be advantageous
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
